This one time, at Bandcamp...

I set myself up with a solo artist page there where you can listen to, read about, and buy my music.  What is Bandcamp?  https://bandcamp.com/  It's an American online record store, and digital music platform based in California.  I did this fairly early in their existence, so my music has been available there for over 15 years now, and my entire self-released discography is available on there.  I sold some CDs on there for a while, but now I only offer high-resolution digital downloads.  It's definitely a cool place to find/stream/buy music from "niche" indie artists like me.

I'm posting this at around 7PM Eastern on a Friday evening with the hope it will reach some of you who are either listening to and/or reading about music after wrapping up your work week.  What if I told you that you could permanently own all Scott Cooley songs in hi-res for only $5.00?

Today is Bandcamp Friday.  It's supposed to be a day when you can buy music from an artist like me and the funds go directly to me.  So, if you did that today (or tonight), it would be cool.  It would help to offset some of the recording costs.  You would feel good about supporting independent music and the people who make it (like me).  I'm not out to raise awareness for any particular cause or charity like some artists do.  I am the charity!  In other words, Bandcamp does this to waive their revenue share and pass it on to me.  It seems they promote one of these days per month, and have been doing it since the pandemic.

I've had some people buy some of my music on Bandcamp in the past, which is of course great, and also I've had people subscribe to me as an artist, which is an especially great thing because for 5 bucks, you get all 13 of my albums immediately!

It is a great deal and incredible value because:

  • You get all of my music at once
  • You get all of it in any high-quality format you want
  • You get to feel good about meaningfully supporting me as an artist
  • You get complete control as a collector and curator of your personal library
  • You get your profile picture listed on my page in the supporter section
  • You own it and can listen to it without an internet connection
Subscribe now by clicking this link:  https://scottcooley.bandcamp.com/subscribe

Some cool things about Bandcamp are:

  • It's easy to discover new artists
  • It's easy to discover artists from a certain region or state
  • You get to read detailed liner notes like you could back in the vinyl record days
  • You can stream music for free before you buy
  • You can get the music in lossless, high-res formats such as WAV, AIFF, AAC, ALAC, FLAC, or Ogg Vorbis files
  • You can pay artists any amount you want to for their music
  • The user interface is easy to use

I would love it if you bought my music.  When you do, your profile shows up on the "supported by" section, so the world will know you support me.  I would also love it if you just followed me on there.  It's free to sign up for a Bandcamp fan account.  Takes a few seconds.  You can do that here:  https://bandcamp.com/fansignup

Then after you have the Bandcamp fan account, navigate to https://music.scottcooley.com and click the Follow button.  Or, just click this:  https://music.scottcooley.com/follow_me

If that still sounds overwhelming, even though it's only a few seconds of effort, I get it.  But don't worry, you'll have other chances.  Here are the other upcoming Bandcamp Friday dates:

  • August 7th
  • September 4th
  • October 2nd
  • November 6th
  • December 4th

Thanks in advance for supporting me, in whatever form that may take!

Bandcamp, anyone?

Have you guys ever checked out Bandcamp?  It's a really awesome place to discover music.  Personally, I pay the monthly subscription for YouTube Music and I love it, but I'm also really into Bandcamp.

The software is designed really well, and their model for independent artists is excellent.  I use it as a fan, but I've also had my music available on there since 2010 when it was new and I became an early adopter as an artist.  Some of you have been loyal listeners for a couple decades now, but I'm not going to call you "superfans" because I'm not out to get all I can out of you by convincing you to buy t-shirts or vinyl remix records or get you to sign up for some fan club app to get "exclusive" stuff that I charge extra for.

I'm not constantly asking people to just send me money for my hobby on one of those crowdfunding platforms, and I'm not going to make you think you're not a real fan if you don't buy all the merch. There is no merchandise.  I used to offer CDs (thanks again to the proud owners out there), but now I don't offer any physical products at all.

Yes, there is a lack of demand :), but I'm a realist who knows you probably pay a monthly subscription to stream music (like I do), and whether on your phone, in your car, or on a smart speaker, it's convenient. I know some of you like to use iTunes and have the actual files in your possession though, so I still offer downloading.  I don't charge more for superfan subscriptions, I actually charge way less.

What if I told you that for five bucks you could get every song from my back catalog - 154 songs I wrote and recorded?  Unlike most artists, I recently lowered the one indie subscription service I offer on Bandcamp - it's now only $5 per year for everything I make...and that includes all of my past album releases.  It's a safe bet in my case because I'm consistently prolific with a new full-length album every two years.

You can stream it all for free right now because I allow it, or you can subscribe and download to actually own the files...and they come in high quality formats.  You become a patron of the arts!  Similar to throwing a few bucks in a street busker's guitar case, it makes you feel good afterward.

Or you can just refresh the browser when it prompts you to pay and start over.  Otherwise, you're paying for Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, or Amazon Music anyway, and I make sure my music is there for you.  For less than the price of breakfast, you can own it all.

You can pay more if you want to.  It would be cool if you did that.  I would like it.  You would have the huge hassle of signing up for Bandcamp fan account, then clicking Subscribe Now.  Your avatar would appear as a Supporter on my page, which is here:  https://music.scottcooley.com.

Sign up for Bandcamp to get started.  Already have an artist or fan account? Log in

or...just go to music.scottcooley.com and click on the subscribe tab.

Things you may be wondering:

Why are you doing this?

You get everything I make, you never miss out on a release because my announcement drowned in your social media fire hose or got buried under a truckload of spam, and you don’t want the hassle of going through a transaction every time I put out something new. You own the music on your terms, your device, whenever or wherever you want it.  It's about convenience for fans, and it's the future of music.

I get a little sustainability at a time, which is quite different than some big crowdfunding campaign in exchange for you getting your name in the album credits or soemthing.  When you have a desire to help an artist you're into, you sustain the artist so they can keep making more great art.

Does it replace other buying options?

No, a subscription is just another option, just like buying the next album on CD or an individual MP3, FLAC or OGG track.

How much does it cost?

The subscription fee is 15.00 / year, and you can subscribe using a credit card.  Your payment goes straight to me, without a bunch of people taking a cut first (only Bandcamp).  It's the new way.

----

But wait, there's more:

This just in...you can now get a giant discount on the entire catalog...and in time for the holidays, you can send it as a gift...

Get all 6 Scott Cooley releases available on Bandcamp and save 25%.
